First you need writing skills o_O

If you want to do anything reconizable, you should really start off by mastering figure drawing. I've heard a lot of people hate it and can't do it, but I really think it's easy. Learn how to work with a body in motion and observe whatever you're drawing shape by shape. Use basic geometric figures as a guideline, an example would be using a rounded triangle as hips. Remember you WILL be erasing these guidelines, so draw light.

That's as basic and easy as I can get it. While I'm a graphic designer, I'm not ussually drawing for work. It's often logos and such that I do, but figure drawing and cartoons are kind of a hobby (not anime, though. I'm not exactly a fan of drawing that style.)

I draw terribly, unless it's simple, abstract stuff. I do perform some graphic designing, but it's more on textures, editing, etc - rather than drawing things from scratch.

Seriously?

I think you have to be born with the talent, I really really mean that. Why do I say that? Because I can't comprehend how people CAN'T draw well. I don't post anything I do here, but I've always had people asking me and others "How the hell do you do that?" and it seriously confuses the hell out of me. I'm like..."What do you mean? I just take the utencil and put it on paper, it's like tracing except without physically having the picture to trace." Drawing's are just lines and curves, that's all it really is. If you can draw a line you can draw a city, if you can draw a curve you can create a creature nobody's ever seen before.

Chances are you can draw a line, and you can draw a curve, hell I could probably pick steps from things and give them to you and you can do them. It's like "Alright now draw a line curved like this." and you could do it---but you wouldn't be able to draw the whole thing---a knight in wicked armor or something. I seriously have no idea why. You can take all the classes you want, but it won't teach you how it'll only teach you how to smooth some edges on the talent you've been given.

I mean myself, I was always one of the best "artists" in my classes in grade school and what not, but every few years I'd look back on that crap and realize how horrible it was. There are things I did just last YEAR that look like ass to me now, and I haven't even tried to improve specifically. It was an ENTIRELY natural improvement.

Maybe it's motor skills, maybe it's someone's ability to work from their mind through their hands. I really really really think it's just a talent some people have, and some people don't. It's like sexual attraction, you don't know why you're attracted to some people and not others, you just are---you don't know why you can draw shit while others can't, you just can.

Pie, that's not completely true. While it's true that some people are born with natural ability to draw, not everyone was born with the ability. Sounds like you have that natural ability while I wasn't.

I had horrible drawing skills but due to interest and hard work and art schooling, I can say that I'm pretty decent now.... I'm not trying to brag but I just wanted this to be encouragement for people who think or know they have no artistic ability at all that it's possible to develop drawing skills.

However, I envy people like you Pie, since I see how people like you can draw with such ease while I have to work twice as hard to get the "same" results.

I'm not saying people can't draw decently enough from hard work, I'm just saying it's not going to come naturally---it won't be so much a "talent" as it will be a chore. I think the main thing that keeps anyone from being good at most anything is themselves---saying "I can't" is probably what's really holding someone from being able to do it. What I mean to say is that it's still a natural talent, even though you can learn up to it. A decent comparison I suppose is that anyone can study hard, work their ass off and become a mathematician but not everyone's going to be able to become an Einstein...if that makes any sense.

Eh those are only good by example: You want to learn your OWN style of going about things, otherwise you'll be in a lot of frustration.

Find some art forums and check out some massive "What are you working on?" threads or something, some places have a thread like that where every day people post shit they're working on. It'll give you wonderful ideas and expose you to so many different styles you'll crap yourself. Also sometimes you'll find people who really really suck at it posting in the threads anyway, and it'll make you feel wicked good. I've seriously learned some of the most valuable things I know just by typing in "concept art" or something in google images and looking at it. I'm the sort of person who might get stuck by myself, but I'll just look at another drawing and be able to do that and more. Try it out.

I totaly agree with this, i can spend two hours drawing something that other people can spend 10 minutes and make it look 10 times better... I mean i was in an art class and no matter how long i spent drawing something it still turned out like crap compared to the rest of the class

I also believe some people are born with no talent at all... for example me (ok not totaly true, my teacher says im one of the best actors in my whole school but I don't seem to think so)

I wish i could draw half as good as some people, then i could actualy spend my time doing something worth while like making art or some super rad comic (doesn't it suck when you have a million ideas but no ability to draw them).... sadly for me thats all just a dream

It's 'cause it's his style. Compair how he sketches everything out to somebody else and it'll be completely different. Once you find your groove, you can do anything. Once you realize you have to stay in the groove, you'll never have any trouble.

Don't try to emulate others too much, or you'll end up frustrated and pissed because yours looks nothing like theirs.
